Applegate After Dark August Update

In the Applegate Valley of Southwest Oregon there is now a dark sky group, Applegate After Dark. Community members are working to raise awareness of dark sky concepts in collaboration with local non-profits Applegate Partnership and Watershed Council, A Greater Applegate and Pollinator Project Rogue Valley (PPRV).

In support of these efforts, members are also collecting dark sky quality data around the Applegate Valley that can be correlated with data logged locally, at a fixed location, within the Bureau of Land Management's Provolt Recreation Site (PRS). This data is contributed to DarkSky Oregon's "Skyglow Measurement Network" and would potentially help qualify the PRS for certification as a Dark Sky Park.

Applegate After Dark's next outreach event, "The Twilight Zone - Bugs, Bats and Beyond", will include presentations by the BLM, PPRV, and local astronomers. Details of the September 23rd event at PRS may be found at www.agreaterapplegate.org.
